How We Help

Cognitive Restructuring

One of the first steps in CBT-I is identifying and challenging negative thought patterns related to sleep. For instance, if you often think, “I’ll never get a good night’s sleep again,” Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia helps you reframe that belief into something more constructive.

Sleep Education

Understanding the basics of sleep cycles, sleep hygiene, and the factors that affect sleep quality can make a significant difference. This knowledge helps reduce the anxiety surrounding sleep and empowers you to take control of your rest.

Sleep Restriction

This technique might sound counterintuitive, but it’s designed to improve sleep efficiency. By limiting the amount of time spent in bed and gradually increasing it as your sleep quality improves, your body can learn to associate bed with sleep more effectively.

Stimulus Control

This involves creating a strong connection between your bed and sleep by going to bed only when you’re sleepy and getting up if you can’t fall asleep. Over time, this helps train your body and mind to recognize that bed is for sleep, not worry or wakefulness.

Relaxation Techniques

CBT-I incorporates relaxation strategies such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or guided imagery. These techniques help reduce tension and anxiety, making it easier for your body to prepare for sleep.

ABOUT US

Why Work With Hamlett Health Psychotherapy

“It’s easy to feel overwhelmed in a life full of demands without the support, acknowledgement or tools you need to succeed.”

Growing up as the seventh of eight children, I mastered the art of observation. I learned to navigate complex relationship dynamics and understand that each of us experiences life uniquely. This insight was deepened by my time volunteering at a group foster home for teen moms, where I saw first-hand the power of feeling heard and acknowledged.

Life can be hard and busy going through our days holding onto so much, stuck in our worlds, and often never allowing ourselves to process, think deeply, or express how we truly feel before we are onto the next thing. Sometimes, all we need is someone to sit with us and truly listen.

With over 23 years of experience, I developed Hamlett Health Psychotherapy practice to provide a safe and nurturing environment where clients can openly discuss their thoughts, emotions, and relationships. Each treatment plan is customized to promote healing and help you develop resilience, confidence, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Let's transform life's challenges into stepping stones for growth.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia

CBT-I, or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia, is a proven treatment that helps you change the thoughts and habits that are making it hard to sleep. Instead of relying on temporary fixes, CBT-I focuses on long-term improvements. It uses techniques like cognitive restructuring to help shift negative thoughts about sleep, sleep education to teach you about healthy sleep habits, and relaxation strategies to calm your mind and body before bed. The goal is to help you build better sleep patterns and feel more positive about bedtime so you can enjoy deeper, more restful sleep.

CBT-I works through a series of sessions with a therapist who guides you step-by-step. First, you’ll talk about your sleep challenges and what might be causing them. Then, you’ll learn and practice different techniques to improve your sleep. This might include sleep restriction, which helps reset your sleep schedule, and stimulus control, which trains your mind to link your bed with sleep and not with stress. Over time, you’ll build new habits and feel less anxious about sleep. CBT-I has been shown to work really well, often giving longer-lasting results than sleep medications.
Many people start to see improvements in their sleep within 4 to 6 weeks. A full course of CBT-I usually lasts 6 to 8 sessions over several weeks. Early on, you’ll focus on learning simple strategies to improve your sleep, and as you go, you’ll fine-tune these habits with your sleep therapist’s help. By the end of the program, most people notice big changes in their sleep and overall energy. The best part is that the tools you learn can keep helping you long after the sessions are over.
Insomnia can look different for everyone, but common signs include having trouble falling asleep, lying awake for 30 minutes or more, waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to fall back asleep, or waking up too early. During the day, you might feel tired, irritable, or have trouble focusing. If these issues happen at least three times a week for three months or longer, it’s worth considering getting help.
Some other issues can mimic or add to insomnia, so it’s important to figure out what’s really going on. Sleep apnea can cause snoring and gasping for air, which interrupts sleep. Restless legs syndrome (RLS) makes you feel like you need to move your legs at night, making it hard to fall asleep. Chronic pain from conditions like arthritis can keep you up, as can mental health issues like anxiety, depression, or PTSD. Other sleep disorders, like narcolepsy or circadian rhythm problems, can also make you feel tired during the day. A sleep therapist can help determine what’s causing your sleep problems and guide you toward the best treatment.
