How We Help Depression

Assessments

Assessments are essential in understanding the root causes of depression. By evaluating the severity and underlying factors of your depression, we can develop tailored depression treatment strategies to effectively address your specific needs.

Conceptualizing Depression through the Cognitive Triangle

(Thoughts-Feelings-Behaviors)
Using the cognitive triangle, therapy helps clients explore how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected. This model shows how negative thinking patterns can fuel depressive emotions and unhelpful behaviors, guiding clients toward healthier thought processes and actions.

Identifying Cognitive Distortions

Depression often involves distorted thinking patterns like “all-or-nothing” thinking or “overgeneralization.” By learning to recognize these cognitive distortions, clients can start to challenge and reshape their thoughts, improving their mood and emotional well-being.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness techniques help individuals stay anchored in the present moment, which can alleviate the weight of depressive thoughts that often focus on past regrets or future worries. This practice increases self-awareness and emotional regulation, helping clients manage depressive symptoms more effectively.

Worksheets

Worksheets provide practical tools to reinforce the skills learned in therapy. They help clients track their progress, practice cognitive strategies, and work on managing their depression between sessions, reinforcing growth and helping to internalize coping techniques.

ABOUT US

Why Work With Hamlett Health Psychotherapy

“It’s easy to feel overwhelmed in a life full of demands without the support, acknowledgement or tools you need to succeed.”

Growing up as the seventh of eight children, I mastered the art of observation. I learned to navigate complex relationship dynamics and understand that each of us experiences life uniquely. This insight was deepened by my time volunteering at a group foster home for teen moms, where I saw first-hand the power of feeling heard and acknowledged.

Life can be hard and busy going through our days holding onto so much, stuck in our worlds, and often never allowing ourselves to process, think deeply, or express how we truly feel before we are onto the next thing. Sometimes, all we need is someone to sit with us and truly listen.

With over 23 years of experience, I developed Hamlett Health Psychotherapy practice to provide a safe and nurturing environment where clients can openly discuss their thoughts, emotions, and relationships. Each treatment plan is customized to promote healing and help you develop resilience, confidence, and a renewed sense of purpose

Let's transform life's challenges into stepping stones for growth.

Frequently Asked Questions About Depression Treatment

It can be tough to know if what you’re feeling is just a rough patch or something more like depression. A good way to tell is by looking at how long it’s been going on. If you’ve been feeling down, empty, or overwhelmed for more than two weeks, it might be depression. You may also notice physical signs like feeling tired all the time, trouble sleeping, changes in your appetite, or even random aches and pains. Depression often makes it hard to feel connected to things you once enjoyed or the people around you. If you’re struggling with constant negative thoughts, feeling worthless, or having trouble focusing, it could be time to reach out for support. Whether it’s depression or not, your feelings are real, and talking to a professional can help you make sense of what’s going on.
In your first few sessions, it’s all about getting to know you. Your therapist will ask about what’s been going on, how depression has been affecting your life, and what you’re hoping to get out of depression treatment. They might ask about your history with mental health and anything important that happened in your life recently. These early sessions are also about building trust—therapy works best when you feel comfortable with your therapist. You’ll also start talking about some strategies to help manage your symptoms, and you’ll get a sense of how the sessions will be structured moving forward, like how often you’ll meet and what you can expect from the process.
Whether or not to take medication for depression is a personal decision. It really depends on a few things, like how severe your depression is and how much it’s affecting your daily life. If therapy alone doesn’t seem to be helping enough, medication can sometimes make it easier to manage your symptoms. It’s also a matter of personal choice—some people want to try therapy first, while others feel more comfortable using a combination of therapy and medication right away. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, and it’s important to talk to a professional who can help you figure out what’s best for you. If you do go the medication route, it can take a little time to find the right type and dosage, so keeping an open line of communication with your doctor is key.
The timeline for feeling better really depends on you and your situation. Some people start to notice improvements in a few weeks, while for others, it might take a few months. Things like how severe your depression is, how often you’re going to therapy, and the type of therapy you’re doing all play a role. Your personal circumstances—like what’s happening in your life, your support system, and how engaged you are in the process—also make a difference. If you’re using medication along with therapy, you might see changes a bit sooner. Progress can be slow and steady, but even small steps forward are worth celebrating. Be patient with yourself, and talk openly with your therapist about how you’re feeling along the way.
