How We Help Anxiety

Assessments

Assessments are essential in understanding the root of the anxiety. By evaluating the severity and triggers of anxiety, tailored strategies can be developed to effectively address and manage triggers.

Conceptualizing Anxiety through the Cognitive Triangle (Thoughts-Feelings-Behaviors):

Using the cognitive triangle, therapy can help clients see the interconnections between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This model uncovers how negative thoughts can lead to anxiety and unhelpful behaviors.

Identifying Cognitive Distortions:

By learning to recognize irrational thought patterns—such as ‘catastrophizing’ or ‘black-and-white thinking’—clients can begin to alter their thinking, reduce anxiety, and approach situations more rationally.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness helps individuals anchor themselves in the present moment, reducing the impact of anxious thoughts about the past or future. This practice enhances self-awareness and emotional regulation, allowing clients to better manage anxiety symptoms.

Worksheets

Worksheets are practical tools used to teach skills, track progress, and practice new cognitive strategies. They allow clients to actively work on managing their anxiety outside of sessions, reinforcing lessons learned in therapy, and helping to internalize new coping techniques.

ABOUT US

Why Work With Hamlett Health Psychotherapy

“It’s easy to feel overwhelmed in a life full of demands without the support, acknowledgement or tools you need to succeed.”

Growing up as the seventh of eight children, I mastered the art of observation. I learned to navigate complex relationship dynamics and understand that each of us experiences life uniquely. This insight was deepened by my time volunteering at a group foster home for teen moms, where I saw first-hand the power of feeling heard and acknowledged.

Life can be hard and busy going through our days holding onto so much, stuck in our worlds, and often never allowing ourselves to process, think deeply, or express how we truly feel before we are onto the next thing. Sometimes, all we need is someone to sit with us and truly listen.

With over 23 years of experience, I developed Hamlett Health Psychotherapy practice to provide a safe and nurturing environment where clients can openly discuss their thoughts, emotions, and relationships. Each treatment plan is customized to promote healing and help you develop resilience, confidence, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Let's transform life's challenges into stepping stones for growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is crucial to prioritize your mental health, and seeking support from a licensed counselor or therapist is a great step. They can provide personalized guidance and strategies tailored to your specific needs.

Keeping a journal or log of your experiences is also a valuable tool for self-reflection and understanding patterns in your anxiety. By tracking your thoughts, emotions, and physical symptoms, you can gain insight into triggers and identify areas where you may need additional support or coping strategies.

Online screenings for anxiety can also provide useful information and serve as a starting point for discussions with a mental health professional. However, it’s important to remember that they are not a substitute for a formal diagnosis or professional assessment.

Ultimately, the goal is to develop a comprehensive understanding of your anxiety and to find effective ways to manage it. Whether through self-reflection, seeking support from a therapist, or utilizing online resources, taking proactive steps toward addressing your anxiety is a positive and empowering choice.

Remember that coping with anxiety is a journey, and it may take time to find the strategies that work best for you. Be patient with yourself and practice self-compassion as you explore different coping techniques. If your anxiety persists or significantly impacts your daily functioning, this is a good time to consider seeking support from a licensed mental health professional.

Below are strategies that may help you manage and reduce your anxious symptoms:

  • Deep Breathing: Practice deep breathing exercises to help calm your nervous system. Focus on taking slow, deep breaths, filling your lungs completely, and then exhaling slowly. This can help reduce feelings of anxiety and promote relaxation.
  • Mindfulness and Meditation: Engage in mindfulness or meditation practices to increase awareness of the present moment and promote relaxation. Mindfulness techniques can help you observe your thoughts and feelings without judgment, which can reduce anxiety.
  • Progressive Muscle Relaxation: Practice progressive muscle relaxation by systematically tensing and then relaxing different muscle groups in your body. This can help release tension and promote relaxation throughout your body.
  • Physical Activity: Engage in regular physical activity, such as walking, jogging, yoga, or dancing. Exercise can help reduce anxiety by releasing endorphins, which are natural mood lifters, and by providing a distraction from anxious thoughts.
  • Healthy Lifestyle: Maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, and avoiding excessive caffeine and alcohol. These lifestyle factors can impact your mood and overall well-being.
  • Limit Stress: Identify sources of stress in your life and find ways to reduce or manage them. This may involve setting boundaries, delegating tasks, or practicing time management techniques.
  • Seek Support: Reach out to friends, family members, or a support group for emotional support. Talking to someone you trust about your feelings can provide validation and comfort.
  • Challenge Negative Thoughts: Practice cognitive-behavioral techniques to challenge and reframe negative thoughts that contribute to anxiety. Replace irrational or catastrophic thoughts with more realistic and positive ones.
  • Set Realistic Goals: Break tasks into smaller, manageable steps and set realistic goals for yourself. Celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small, to boost your confidence and motivation.
  • Self-Care: Prioritize self-care activities that bring you joy and relaxation, such as spending time in nature, reading a book, or taking a warm bath. Taking care of your emotional and physical needs is essential for managing anxiety.

Effective treatment for anxiety disorders typically involves a combination of therapy, medication, and self-help strategies. Here are some common approaches:

Therapy (Psychotherapy):
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT is a highly effective form of therapy for treating anxiety disorders. It helps individuals identify and challenge negative thought patterns and beliefs that contribute to anxiety. CBT also teaches coping skills and relaxation techniques to manage anxiety symptoms.
  • Exposure Therapy: This type of therapy involves gradually exposing individuals to feared situations or objects in a controlled and supportive environment. Through repeated exposure, individuals learn to confront and tolerate their fears, reducing anxiety over time.
  • Mindfulness-Based Therapies: Approaches such as mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) can help individuals cultivate awareness of their thoughts and feelings, develop acceptance of discomfort, and learn to respond more effectively to anxiety.
  • Other Therapies: Other types of therapy, such as interpersonal therapy (IPT) and psychodynamic therapy, may also be beneficial for certain individuals with anxiety disorders.

Medication:
  • Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs):These are commonly prescribed antidepressant medications that are effective in treating various anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder.
  • Benzodiazepines: These medications may be prescribed for short-term relief of severe anxiety symptoms, but they are typically not recommended for long-term use due to the risk of dependence and withdrawal.
  • Other Medications: Other medications, such as buspirone and certain anticonvulsants or beta-blockers, may be prescribed to help manage anxiety symptoms in some cases.

Self-Help Strategies:
  • Lifestyle Changes: Engaging in regular exercise, maintaining a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, and reducing caffeine and alcohol intake can help manage anxiety symptoms.
  • Stress Management Techniques: Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and mindfulness meditation to reduce stress and promote relaxation.
  • Support Groups: Joining a support group for individuals with anxiety disorders can provide validation, encouragement, and practical tips for managing symptoms.
  • Self-Help Resources: Utilize self-help books, online resources, and mobile apps designed to help individuals learn coping skills and manage anxiety.

It’s important for individuals with anxiety disorders or panic disorders to work with a mental health professional to develop a personalized anxiety treatment plan tailored to their specific needs and preferences. Effective treatment may involve a combination of therapy, medication, and self-help strategies, and it may take time to find the approach that works best for each individual.

While the American Psychological Association’s guideline of improvement within 12 to 16 sessions is a helpful reference point, it’s essential to recognize that every individual’s journey through therapy is unique. Some individuals may experience significant improvement within this timeframe, while others may require more extended or ongoing treatment. Ultimately, the duration of therapy should be determined collaboratively between you and your therapist based on your progress, goals, and evolving needs.

The duration of anxiety therapy can vary greatly depending on individual circumstances and factors. Here’s a breakdown of some considerations:

  • Type and Severity of Anxiety Disorder: Different anxiety disorders may require varying durations of therapy. For instance, someone with mild social anxiety may require fewer sessions than someone with severe panic disorder.
  • Motivation and Engagement: Your level of motivation to participate in therapy and engage in treatment exercises can influence the length of therapy. Individuals who are actively involved in their treatment process may see faster progress.
  • Therapeutic Relationship: The quality of the therapeutic relationship between you and your therapist can impact the effectiveness and efficiency of therapy. Feeling comfortable and understood by your therapist may facilitate progress.
  • Treatment Modality: Different therapeutic approaches may have different durations. Some evidence-based therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), are typically more short-term focused, while other modalities may require longer-term commitment.
  • Frequency and Duration of Sessions: The frequency and duration of therapy sessions can affect the overall timeline of treatment. Weekly sessions may lead to faster progress compared to biweekly or monthly sessions.
  • Goals and Outcomes: The specific goals you want to achieve through therapy and your desired outcomes can influence the length of treatment. Working collaboratively with your therapist to establish clear, achievable goals can help guide the therapy process.
  • Need for Booster Sessions or Maintenance Therapy: Some individuals may benefit from additional sessions or periodic “booster” sessions to maintain progress or address relapse prevention strategies.
