How We Help OCD

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

This evidence-based approach is highly effective for treating OCD. ERP involves gradually facing your fears without engaging in compulsive behaviors, which helps reduce anxiety over time and break the cycle of obsession and compulsion.

Medications

For some, medication can be a helpful part of their treatment plan. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are commonly prescribed and can reduce the intensity of obsessive thoughts and compulsions. Discussing medication options with your physician can provide additional support for managing OCD symptoms.

Combination Therapy

Many clients find that the best results come from a combination of OCD therapy and medication. This approach addresses both the cognitive and biological aspects of OCD, promoting more comprehensive and lasting improvements.

ABOUT US

Why Work With Hamlett Health Psychotherapy

“It’s easy to feel overwhelmed in a life full of demands without the support, acknowledgement or tools you need to succeed.”

Growing up as the seventh of eight children, I mastered the art of observation. I learned to navigate complex relationship dynamics and understand that each of us experiences life uniquely. This insight was deepened by my time volunteering at a group foster home for teen moms, where I saw first-hand the power of feeling heard and acknowledged.

Life can be hard and busy going through our days holding onto so much, stuck in our worlds, and often never allowing ourselves to process, think deeply, or express how we truly feel before we are onto the next thing. Sometimes, all we need is someone to sit with us and truly listen.

With over 23 years of experience, I developed Hamlett Health Psychotherapy practice to provide a safe and nurturing environment where clients can openly discuss their thoughts, emotions, and relationships. Each treatment plan is customized to promote healing and help you develop resilience, confidence, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Let's transform life's challenges into stepping stones for growth.

Frequently Asked Questions About OCD Therapy

OCD, or Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, is a mental health condition characterized by unwanted, OCD intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) that individuals feel driven to perform to alleviate anxiety. These behaviors often provide temporary relief but can take over daily life.

Common symptoms include persistent fears or worries, such as contamination or harming others, and compulsive behaviors like excessive cleaning, checking, or counting. OCD can cause significant distress and make daily functioning difficult.

OCD can appear in various forms, such as:

  • Contamination OCD: Fear of germs leading to excessive cleaning.
  • Harm OCD: Intrusive thoughts about causing harm, leading to checking behaviors.
  • Symmetry OCD: The need for items to be perfectly aligned or arranged.
  • Intrusive Thoughts OCD: Unwanted, distressing thoughts about taboo topics.
  • Scrupulosity: Obsessions about moral or religious correctness.
  • Hoarding: Difficulty discarding items due to anxiety about losing important information or memories.

“Pure O” refers to a form of OCD where individuals experience mainly obsessive thoughts without visible compulsions. However, mental compulsions, like rumination or reassurance-seeking, are often present.

Skin picking (excoriation disorder) and hair pulling (trichotillomania) are related to OCD but are classified as separate conditions. They involve compulsive behaviors driven by anxiety or stress and can benefit from similar treatment approaches, like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
